When you first install a shiny new copy of SQL Server 2012 (or an earlier version of SQL Server) from the DVD that came with the box, what you have is the RTM build of that major version of SQL. Service Packs are typically released every 12-18 months. This is also the last Service Pack for any SQL Server version, as previously announced in the Modern Servicing Model for SQL Server.
